Mercedes Schlapp's position in the role of White House Strategic Communications Advisor isn't simple. As the White House Strategic Communications Advisor, Schlapp has to face a variety of challenges. Presidents can become his own director of communications. There are numerous legal matters which could impact messaging strategies. Cabinet Secretaries have been involved in controversies. Schlapp was focused through the entire process, collaborating closely with the White House's legislative and political affairs teams as well as policy shops and wider communications operations to coordinate policy implementation. The first few months, Schlapp has concentrated on school safety issues, addiction infrastructure, international trade and addiction. There isn't much interaction with the media in her role. It was in March that she gained a sudden burst attention, when it became it was announced that she would be a potential candidate to fill in Hope Hicks's role as director of communication. Mercedes Schlapp has to deal with an administration beset by numerous problems, such as a president who is acting as his own director of communications and Cabinet Secretaries who are embroiled in their respective controversies. Schlapp is keeping her eyes on the target, and has been coordinating policies together with White House staff from the Political and Legislative Affairs team and policy shop as well as broader communication. The focus of her work has been on areas including school safety, opioids and infrastructure, along with trade. Schlapp isn't involved with journalists much in her current role. In March, her name was rumored to be the candidate to succeed Hope Hicks at the Communications Director job. The fight has been ugly. Schlapp's ally Tony Sayegh and an alternative candidate, also named Tony, have been fighting during the media coverage. Schlapp stated to that the Washington Examiner that she spoke with Sayegh regarding a recent negative article on him.
